Methow Valley · Okanogan County

A place to take an animal instead of leaving it on the road.

North Cascades Animal Refuge · An initiative of Indigo Unlimited, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit · serving the Methow Valley & Okanogan County

Okanogan County has no public shelter. Dogs and cats are dumped on Forest Service roads, in orchards, and along Highway 153. Indigo Unlimited exists to change that.

01 — Vision

Small. Local. Staffed. Not a warehouse of cages.

We are standing up a rural intake site for dumped and homeless animals in the lower Methow and greater Okanogan County. Short holds. Real fosters. Clinic days with partners who already do the work. No commercial kennel. No change to the highway’s character.

Intake that is open

A door a person can walk up to when they find a dog on 153, instead of tying it to a tree or leaving it at a trailhead.

Hold, then home

Short-term boarding while we place animals with fosters and adopters. Isolation space so one sick intake does not take the whole room.

Clinic days

Room for vaccine and spay/neuter days with groups already doing TNR and field work. We do not replace them. We give them a floor.

02 — The gap

There is no public shelter here.

Existing rescues and clinic teams already stretch across a county the size of some states. What they do not have is a building with pens, isolation, and a place the public knows to surrender an animal. That absence is why animals end up on the road.

Indigo Unlimited is a local nonprofit effort based in Winthrop. We raise conversion funds ourselves. We carry insurance. We ask the county for the change of use. Donations go to build-out, feed, vet holds, and keeping the door open — not to a distant office.

03 — What a gift pays for

Concrete, not a slogan.

Pens and isolation

Safe indoor runs, cat condos, and a separate sick bay so intake can happen in January as well as July.

First vet week

Vaccines, tests, and emergency holds for the animals that arrive before a foster is ready.

Someone at the door

Staffed hours so surrender is not a locked gate and a note. That is the whole point of a building.
